Planning for life beyond COVID-19 – Saint Lucia News from The Voice
âYou cannot predict or control the future. You can only adapt. You can however live in the present. Raghav Mathur
It’s time to realize the reality that we need to adapt to the new normal. Failure to do so will cause stagnation and life will simply stop. No matter what state we find ourselves in, our best weapon is to be optimistic. It is with a sense of frustration that we wake up daily to the scourge of COVID 19 staring us in the face. We hear about the passing of loved ones and friends. It is a daunting experience and no one could have predicted such a state of affairs in this modern era where human progress has never been greater.
This year, everyone was hoping that the start of the school year would have been different with our children in the classroom, but it is rather the return to online learning. Our children and grandchildren are deprived of the joys we experienced during school days, which many of us like to call that time when our spirits were developing with education in the heart. The good old days were really the good old days. Nothing today can compare to those days when the little things meant a lot and respect for parents, elders and our friends was engraved in our hearts. Love comes from the heart. The greatest commandment is – that we love one another.
In our quest to continue with our busy lives, we compensate and pamper our children with gifts that are addictive and, in many cases, make them forget what is going on around them. Morals mean that man is no longer inculcated in the minds of our children. Many children find it difficult to welcome adults. It is so uplifting when we are greeted by Good Morning from a youngster. No wonder we find ourselves in the state the world is in today. The virtues that were taught in the past have been undermined for decades now.
Technology has given our children their independence from an early age, when parental controls should be the strictest. In many homes today, young people ignore the presence of other people in their immediate surroundings when they are connected to their iPads and smartphones. Storytelling which is the foundation of local and family history is not encouraged due to the lack of interest from our young people. The method of delivering education needs to be revised to produce a more complete student / citizen.
Most of the time, our governments in the region are reactive rather than proactive. Now is the time for our leaders in all walks of life to take stock of where we stand today and plan for the future beyond COVID 19. It is time to do a RESET. GO BOLD, GO BIG! Now is the time for us to be creative and think outside the box. Explore the opportunities that are consistent with the new normal, whatever your idea. It’s about PLANNING, PLANNING, PLANNING! Our ability to win tomorrow is highly dependent on how we plan today.
Strategic planning has been applied in all sectors of our national economy. Many of these plans will need to be changed or removed altogether. In the last thirty months, things have really changed. In many cases, things will not turn out as they used to be. It was because of the various uncertainties that it became necessary to return to the drawing board with vision and energy. Let’s challenge ourselves to do what has never been done before. However, we must be prepared to be flexible in our planning as we live in fluid times.
Despite COVID 19, New York state reopened for business a few weeks ago with a concert that featured a large line-up of musicians, singers and show business figures. This week, we saw the return of Broadway shows. New Yorkers should be proud of their accomplishments. This involved planning and financing with the cooperation of leaders from the public and private sectors. A festival planning committee should be put in place to make 2022 our best festival year in Saint Lucia. Energy must be spontaneous and contagious.
There are a few promoters who would undoubtedly be working on plans to launch into entertainment programs even before 2022, because for most of them, that’s all they do. Cultural and social programs should be encouraged with the granting of meaningful incentives. It will be a sure way to rejuvenate our citizens. St. LUCIA! St. LUCIA! Let the show begin! Let’s start aggressively planning for life beyond COVID 19.
Follow the science, get vaccinated, stay safe, and stay home. Keep the faith, Yahweh is in charge. We will vanquish.
